Can You Use Household Products to Clean a Headstone?

A short explanation of the risks involved in using household products to clean graves

It’s very common to wonder whether everyday household cleaning products can be used to clean a headstone. While it may seem like a simple solution, many household products can cause serious and permanent damage to grave markers.

Why Household Cleaners Are Risky

Most household cleaners are designed for modern, sealed surfaces like kitchens and bathrooms — not stone that has been outdoors for decades. Products such as bleach, vinegar, brick acid, washing-up liquid, or pressure washers can:

  • Strip the surface of the stone
  • Cause discolouration or streaking
  • Weaken the stone structure over time
  • Accelerate erosion, especially on older headstones

Even products labelled as “natural” can be harmful if they are acidic or abrasive.

What Can Be Used Safely?

In very limited circumstances, the safest DIY approach is:

  • Clean water
  • A soft-bristled brush (never wire or stiff brushes)

Gently brushing loose dirt away with water can be acceptable for hard stones like granite, provided the stone is in good condition. However, this should never be done on soft or damaged stone.

When You Should Not Attempt DIY Cleaning

You should avoid cleaning a headstone yourself if:

  • The stone is sandstone, limestone, or marble
  • The lettering is flaking or fragile
  • There are visible cracks or structural damage
  • The headstone is very old or historically significant

In these cases, even water and a soft brush can cause harm.

A Gentle Word of Advice

What looks like “dirt” is often part of the stone’s protective surface. Removing it incorrectly can do more damage than leaving it untouched. Professional grave cleaners use specialist, stone-safe methods designed to clean without eroding or weakening the memorial.

If you’re unsure, it’s always better to seek advice before attempting any cleaning yourself. The Lovely Graves team is happy to offer guidance on the safest next steps.
