About the project

In late 2023, Jason Anderson approached our grave tending service to restore the headstone of his grandparents, located in Kirkdale Cemetery. The headstone, which had been standing for over 80 years, was made from a porous limestone that had become severely weathered over time. Rain, wind, and general environmental wear had taken their toll, leaving the stone chipped, discolored, and with faded, illegible inscriptions. The gilded lettering had almost entirely worn away, diminishing the visibility of the names and dates, which were of great significance to Jason and his family.

The restoration project involved a thorough cleaning of the stone to remove years of accumulated dirt and biological growth, repairing chips and cracks that had formed, and re-gilding the lettering to restore the headstone's original appearance. Jason wanted to ensure that the restoration would not only improve the aesthetic appeal but also preserve the stone's integrity for many more years to come.

Challenges & solutions

This project came with a range of challenges, primarily due to the fragile condition of the porous limestone and the extent of the weathering that had occurred over the decades. Each stage of the restoration had to be carefully planned to ensure the stone was treated with respect and that no further damage was caused during the process.

1. Severe Weathering and Stone Fragility:
   One of the primary issues was the porous nature of the limestone. The stone had absorbed moisture over the years, which, combined with fluctuating temperatures, caused the surface to degrade. The stone had become soft in certain areas, making it vulnerable to further damage if handled incorrectly. To address this, we began with a non-invasive, low-pressure steam cleaning process to remove surface dirt and biological growth such as lichen and moss. This cleaning method is ideal for delicate stones like limestone, as it gently lifts dirt without causing additional wear. Using steam instead of water also ensured that no excess moisture would penetrate the already porous stone.‍
2. Chips and Cracks:
   The headstone had developed several chips and cracks, especially around the edges and in areas where the stone was thinnest. These needed to be filled and stabilized to prevent further deterioration. After a thorough assessment, we selected a lime-based mortar that matched the original composition and color of the stone. This material is breathable, allowing the stone to expand and contract naturally with the weather, while also providing long-term stability. The filling process required precise application to ensure that the repairs blended seamlessly with the existing stone. Once filled, the areas were smoothed and sculpted to mimic the original shape and texture of the headstone.‍
3. Restoring the Gilded Lettering:
   The inscriptions on the headstone had originally been gilded in gold leaf, but over time, the gold had worn away almost completely, leaving the lettering faded and difficult to read. Jason was particularly concerned about this aspect of the restoration, as the inscriptions were a key part of his family’s memorial and were of personal importance. To restore the lettering, we first deep-cleaned the engraved areas using fine brushes to remove any remaining dirt and grime. This process was done with extreme care to ensure that the already faded inscriptions weren’t eroded further. Once the engravings were cleaned, we prepared them for re-gilding by applying a special primer that would help the gold leaf adhere to the stone surface. The re-gilding process involved the delicate application of 23.5-carat gold leaf, which was applied by hand to ensure precision and clarity. The result was a vibrant, clear restoration of the lettering that made the names and dates stand out beautifully against the stone once again.‍
4. Weather-Proofing:
   Given the porous nature of the limestone and the exposure to weather, it was essential to protect the headstone from future degradation. After the cleaning, repairs, and gilding were complete, we applied a breathable stone sealant. This protective layer helps prevent moisture from seeping into the stone while allowing it to release any existing moisture naturally, thus avoiding potential damage from frost or rain.

Outcome & client feedback

After several weeks of careful, phased work, the restoration of the headstone at Kirkdale Cemetery was completed successfully. The intensive cleaning restored the stone to its original, lighter color, revealing the natural beauty of the limestone. The chips and cracks were filled seamlessly, and the re-gilding of the lettering brought new life to the inscriptions, making them once again clear and legible from a distance.
