About the project

In 2022, our grave tending service was approached by a client seeking regular maintenance of her late grandfather’s gravesite at Runcorn Cemetery. The client, who preferred to remain anonymous, signed up for our most popular seasonal maintenance plan, which includes four visits per year to ensure the gravesite is kept clean, tidy, and well-maintained throughout the seasons. The grave held significant meaning for the family, particularly as it belonged to their beloved patriarch, whose memory they wished to honor year-round.

The maintenance plan covers a comprehensive range of services, including cleaning the headstone and kerbs, removing moss and weeds, trimming the surrounding lawn, and laying fresh flowers at each visit. The grave is located in an open area of the cemetery, making it prone to environmental wear and the growth of moss and weeds. Regular care was essential to maintaining the site’s appearance, while the addition of fresh flowers brought a personal, touching element to each visit.

As the family approached what would have been their grandfather’s 100th birthday, they requested a special service to mark the occasion. This involved laying specially engraved ornaments on the grave and installing a commemorative plaque to honour the milestone.

Challenges & solutions

While regular maintenance services may seem straightforward, this project presented specific challenges related to the upkeep of a grave in an exposed area of Runcorn Cemetery and the emotional weight of the centennial commemoration. Our team carefully balanced practical maintenance with the sensitivity required to honor such a significant occasion.

  1. Regular Maintenance in an Exposed Area:
The grave was located in an open section of Runcorn Cemetery, meaning it was subject to direct sunlight in the summer, frost in the winter, and frequent rain throughout the year. These conditions made moss and weed growth particularly aggressive, especially along the edges of the kerbs and headstone base. To address this, we implemented a bi-annual moss treatment using a safe, biodegradable biocide, which effectively controlled the growth without harming the environment. During each visit, our team removed any visible weeds by hand and trimmed the surrounding lawn to maintain a neat and orderly appearance. We also regularly edged the kerbs to prevent overgrowth, keeping the grave looking clean and respectful
  2. Headstone and Kerb Cleaning:
The headstone and kerbs, made of light-colored granite, were prone to discoloration from dirt and weather exposure. During each seasonal visit, we used a gentle, non-abrasive cleaning solution to remove surface dirt, algae, and grime. A soft brush was employed to scrub the surface and reach into the grooves of the inscriptions without damaging the stone. This method ensured that the granite retained its polished look and the inscriptions remained clear and legible throughout the year. Additionally, during the autumn and winter months, when wet conditions made the stone more susceptible to moss and algae growth, we used a low-pressure rinse to remove excess buildup. This approach not only kept the headstone looking its best but also helped to preserve its longevity.
  3. Laying Fresh Flowers:
One of the most personal aspects of this maintenance plan was the laying of fresh flowers at every visit. The client chose seasonal blooms, which reflected the time of year and added a personal touch to the gravesite. Spring visits included daffodils and tulips, while autumn brought chrysanthemums and heather. The regular placement of flowers transformed the grave into a living tribute and added an element of warmth that the family greatly appreciated.
  4. Commemorative Plaque for the 100th Birthday:
In late 2023, the client approached us with a special request to mark her grandfather’s 100th birthday. She wanted the grave to be decorated with engraved ornaments and for a commemorative plaque to be installed. This milestone was incredibly meaningful to the family, and they wanted to honor it in a way that would create a lasting tribute. Our team worked closely with the client to design a custom commemorative plaque that would complement the existing headstone. The plaque was crafted in polished brass and engraved with the words: “In Loving Memory of Our Grandfather on His 100th Birthday – Forever in Our Hearts.” We installed the plaque at the base of the headstone in a secure but visually harmonious way, ensuring it added to the grave’s aesthetic without overwhelming it. Along with the plaque, we laid two engraved ornaments, chosen by the client, which featured messages of remembrance. These ornaments were placed at either side of the headstone, adding a unique and personal touch to the site for this special occasion. On the day of the visit, we also laid a fresh bouquet of white lilies, the client’s grandfather’s favorite flowers, which gave a final, elegant flourish to the commemorative display.

Outcome and client feedback

The gravesite at Runcorn Cemetery is now a well-maintained and beautiful resting place that reflects the love and respect of the family. Our regular visits have ensured that the grave remains in pristine condition, free from moss, weeds, and overgrowth. The headstone and kerbs are consistently clean and polished, providing a dignified memorial for the client’s late grandfather.

The seasonal flowers have added a continuous sense of life and renewal to the site, offering the family comfort in knowing that their grandfather’s grave is regularly cared for. The final visit of 2023, which marked his 100th birthday, was a particularly special moment for the family. The addition of the commemorative plaque and engraved ornaments created a lasting tribute that will remain part of the gravesite for years to come.

The client expressed her deep appreciation for the care and attention to detail shown by our team. She commented:

"Every time I visit, I’m touched by how beautiful and cared for the grave looks. The flowers are always fresh, and the headstone is spotless. When we marked my grandfather’s 100th birthday, the plaque and ornaments were more than I could have hoped for. It felt like a true celebration of his life and legacy.
